AI Employee Cost Calculator
Hiring a US employee costs their salary times about 1.43 for benefits and payroll taxes, plus roughly $5,475 to hire and a multi-month ramp — often six figures fully loaded in year one. AI agents for the same function run $0–$99/month. This free, BLS-sourced calculator shows the real gap for your role.

What AI agents don't cover for a Marketing Manager
- Owning budget tradeoffs. AI can't own cross-functional budget tradeoffs or defend spend to a board or CEO when priorities conflict.
- Reading the market. It won't read shifting market and competitive context the way a human who lives in the category does, so strategy can drift stale.
- Internal buy-in. It can't build the internal relationships and political capital needed to actually get campaigns shipped across teams.

The salary you see is only part of what an employee costs. This calculator adds three layers most hiring plans miss, each from a primary source.
1. Benefits and employer taxes (×1.43). Wages are only 70.1% of total compensation for private-industry workers; the rest is health insurance, retirement, paid leave, and employer payroll taxes. Source: BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation, December 2025. Dividing 1 by 0.701 gives a 1.43× multiplier on base salary.
2. One-time cost to hire ($5,475). Sourcing, interviewing, and onboarding a non-executive hire. Source: SHRM 2025 Recruiting Benchmarking Report.
3. Ramp productivity loss. A new hire takes about three months to reach full output. We count the lost value as three months at 50% productivity.
Base salaries are the national median annual wage from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS), May 2024 for the closest-matching occupation, shown with its SOC code. Every input is editable, so you can drop in your own market rate.
The formulas
Fully-loaded annual cost = salary × multiplier × scope. Year-one cost adds the one-time hiring cost and the ramp loss, which is the monthly loaded cost × ramp months × 50%. AI cost is the annualized plan price. Savings is the difference, and break-even is the first month the cumulative human cost passes the cumulative AI cost.
Worked example: a Marketing Manager
The BLS OEWS May 2024 median for a Marketing Manager (SOC 11-2021) is $161,030. At a 1.43× employment-cost multiplier, the fully-loaded salary is $230,273. Add $5,475 to hire and a three-month ramp at 50% productivity, about $28,784 in lost output, and the year-one cost is $264,532. Years two and three run $230,273 each.
Running AI agents for the same marketing function costs $588 per year on Founderr's $49/month Pro plan, or roughly $1,800 per year for a do-it-yourself stack of an LLM seat plus one or two point tools. The year-one gap is about $263,944.
That gap is real, but it is not the whole story. AI agents draft campaigns, write copy, run outreach, and analyze results; they do not own budget tradeoffs, read shifting market context, or build the internal relationships that get work shipped. Treat the number as the cost of augmenting, and partially replacing, a role, not a one-for-one swap.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to run AI agents versus hiring a full-time employee?
A US employee costs their salary times roughly 1.43 for benefits and payroll taxes, plus about $5,475 to hire and a multi-month ramp — often $90,000–$260,000 fully loaded in year one. AI agents to cover the same function run $0–$99/month on Founderr, or roughly $100–$300/month for a DIY tool stack.
Is the fully-loaded cost really 1.43x salary?
Yes, for private-industry workers. BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (December 2025) shows wages are 70.1% of total compensation; the other 29.9% is benefits and employer payroll taxes. Dividing 1 by 0.701 gives a 1.43x multiplier on base salary, before hiring and ramp costs.
Can AI agents fully replace an employee?
Not for every role. AI agents reliably handle repeatable, tool-driven execution — drafting, outreach, support triage, research, scheduling. They can't own strategy, build human relationships, exercise judgment on exceptions, or do physical and in-person work. Treat the savings as augmentation plus partial replacement, not a full swap.
Where do the salary numbers come from?
Each default is the national median annual wage from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics OEWS program (May 2024) for the closest-matching occupation, shown with its SOC code and a source link. Every figure is editable, so you can drop in your own market rate or a specific city's data.
